gave Fort Myers its' nickname, "The City of Palms."

one of the fastest growing communities in the county for most of that time. With easy access to many pristine beaches, parks

Fort Myers History
Fort Myers named after Colonel Abraham C. Myers was first established as a fort built along the Caloosahatchee River during the
Seminole Indian Wars. The fort was eventually disassembled soon after the southern most battle of the Civil war taking place in
North Fort Myers. Fort Myers officially became a small town just before the turn of the century.

Like much of the surrounding area, Fort Myers was settled by ranchers and farmers making their living raising cattle and crops
such as tomatoes and avocados.

In the late 1800s, Tomas Alva Edison built his winter home and laboratory, Seminole Lodge, in Fort Myers near the Caloosatchee
River and soon thereafter, Fort Myers second most famous resident, Henry Ford, built his winter home next door. Today, the
Edison Ford Estates are one of Fort Myers most visited attractions with their guided tours of the homes, laboratories and
gardens.

In the early 1900s a building boom began in the Fort Myers area as many relocated to the area seeking their fortune with real
estate investments along the pristine waterways in the Fort Myers area. This boom stalled in the mid 1920s until after the Great
Depression where it began to pick up again as several air bases, Buckingham and Page Field, brought many servicemen to the
area as beautiful weather in Fort Myers was the perfect training ground for new pilots.

After the end of World War II, the real estate boom was back in full force and has continued ever since.

Recently, extensive renovation of the historic downtown waterfront was begun, with new restaurants, nightclubs, apartments,
and artistic venues providing energy and growth.

Fort Myers is today and likely always be one of the most desired areas to live in the county.
